The first Chinese restaurant Kingston ever had.

In 1927 Jimmi Eng and his young son Paul opened a small restaurant on the second floor of an old building on Wall Street. Through the Depression it held to one idea — fresh food at affordable prices — and drew customers from as far as Albany. Ninety-nine years and two moves later, the Eng and Sit families still run the room.

That is the entire business plan, and it worked: the third generation is on the floor tonight. In 2026 the James Beard Foundation named Eng’s one of America’s Classics.

01Three addressesOne restaurant

Up one flight of stairs, then across the street, then up the hill.

1927304 Wall Street, second floor. Jimmi and Paul Eng open the city’s first Chinese restaurant above an old storefront.

1955297 Wall Street. Paul moves the room across the street for more seats.

1966726 Broadway. Paul and May Eng move to the present address — the one the neon arrow has pointed at ever since.
